Loveland Ski Area is always one of the first resorts open in the the country, we know you've got questions, so we went to the source to get some answers.
Interview with John Sellers and Weston Brandt (Terrain Park Supervisor)
Do you have a planned schedule as far as snowmaking is concerned, I know I saw a countdown on your website?
The plan is to start as soon as the weather allows. We typically start at the end of September. Our countdown was ticking away to September 27, but it looks like we may have to wait a little while longer for the cold temperatures we need to get started.
UPDATE: Snowmaking at Loveland started last night! From www.skiloveland.com: "Mother Nature delivered 7 inches of snow to the slopes of Loveland Ski Area over the past three days. Not to be outdone, Loveland's snowmaking team fired up 17 snow guns last night and began laying down some manmade flakes of their own."
I know it’s still early, but how are snowmaking conditions looking compared to past years?
Impossible to say, but once we start making snow, it usually takes about two weeks for us to be ready to open.
Is there any pressure to be the first resort open every year?
Yes, I think there is pressure on our crew to get us open first. But, our snowmaking crew works very hard to get the mountain ready to open as soon as possible every year regardless of what the other resorts are doing. We promise our guests a long season and we do everything we can to get the lifts turning as soon as possible.
What changes can snowboarders expect to see at Loveland this year?
We have added a new warming hut, the Ginny Lee Cabin, off Chair 8 so riders can stop in There to warm up or use the restrooms without having to come all the way to the base area.
We thinned out the Cat’s-Nix Trees off Chair 1, which is some of the best tree skiing on the mountain. It is steep and was very tight, so we removed some trees to open it up a bit more. It wasn’t a full-on glading operation, it is still tight, but there are some new lines in there that I can’t wait to check out.
Any plans for the early season terrain park?
Weston: We are looking to have three to five features in our opening park with something for beginner to advanced riders. Our early season park will move to the top of Chair 6 as soon as possible. There we will offer unique lines and options for a skate like flow with a strong progression for learning new tricks.
What about improvements to the terrain park overall?
Weston: Park Crew has been fabricating new features over the off-season to provide better progression from our beginner park (LG's Park) to our more advanced park (Love Park). Love Park will be changing location from Roulette to Straight Flush and Royal Flush to provide better flow and space. Straight Flush will feature a roller cross course with berm turns and rollers offering fun for most ages and abilities.
Any early season events or happenings we should know about?
Christy Sports Demo Day is a big event for us on Saturday, November 15. Riders can check out the newest gear before they buy their new stick for the upcoming season. Packages include lift ticket, unlimited demos and lunch, price is to be determined. The Never Summer crew will also be up for free demo days on November 15th and 16th. Lastly, Pat Milbery will host a SoGnar Snowboard Camp on Saturday and Sunday, December 6th and 6th; you can learn more on the SoGnar website.
