Zach Rawles has been a staple in the Colorado snowboard scene for years now. He's had countless photos in the magazine, a cover, and a slew of video parts. After the end of Role Model Productions, Zach even started producing his own videos and came up with a full-length movie in Smoke Signals last year. We were excited to hear Zach took home best trick at Hot Dawgz and Handrails over the weekend, so we got a hold of him to ask him about the experience.
First off, congratulations on winning Best Trick at Hot Dawgz and Handrails. Did you expect to walk away with a check when you went to California?
Not really, I was actually partying when they called my name and I had no Idea. Schubert came up to me and was like, "dude, you won best trick." I didn't believe him, but then I looked up and was in shock.
What was your winning trick?
Backside 180 to switch 5050 switch back 360 out, I've been doing it for years and it's my go-to trick. Off of that one trick in the last 5 years I've came up over $2000.
Did you head to the strip club, bar, or dispensary with your winnings?
Truly all of the above. I actually got arrested and brought home in cuffs by a cop car the night of the contest. I don't know how I convinced them out of bringing me to jail. Big Bear is wild that weekend!
When was the last time you even snowboarded before the contest? I know most of these dudes spend all summer riding.
I haven't rode since the day A-Basin closed, I was a little rusty and now I'm sore as can be.
The list of competitors and past winners at HDHRs is pretty insane, how does it feel to be one of the few?
Extremely well, I've been doing the contest for 5 years now and never won anything. But I'm hyped to be on a list with my boys Jaeger Bailey, Brandon Hobush, and Mike Casanova.
Do you feel Colorado riders don’t get enough recognition at national events like this?
Not really, not many people from CO are considered rail kids; everyone thinks we just ride pow and wait in lines at ski resorts. I love CO and love when people talk shit on where I grew up, if you don't like it, don't go. We don't need to hear your opinions.
You recently won the Crew Battle too, what was that all about?
The Crew Battle was a video contest that happened at Jed Anderson's Crazy Loco premiere in Boulder this past Friday. I was actually in Big Bear when AJH texted me and said we won. I was kind of in shock. Turned out to be a good weekend... won two contest in two days.
Where is your crew’s footage going from last year now that there is no more Halladangus?
Since we recently cancelled Halladangus, I made that crew video, but all the really gnarly stuff is going to Skeleton Crew's new movie, which I couldn't be happier to be apart of.
Besides winning contests, what else have you been up to this summer?
Other than skating every day, I recently got a big boy office job and work for a nationwide scanning and paper shredding company.
Any plans for this winter?
Snowboarding , partying, work. Someone's gotta do it!
