Name: Jake Kuzyk
Hometown: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Resides: Vancouver, BC

So Jake, where are we right now?
We are in Colorado, in Silverhorn?

Silverthorne.
Yeah, Silverthorne, cool, almost had it [laughs]. Well, actually we are in the Gerard family backyard, that’s exactly where we are. I don’t know if I should have given away their hometown, but… [laughs]

It’s all good. What are you doing out here in Colorado?
I am here with the Déjà Vu dudes, they come here every year like a group of friends. I think for the last four years they’ve been coming here, and they just snowboard, warm up for the season, ride the resorts. So I came with them this year, it’s my first time here for this part of the season and my second time here ever.

So where have you been riding besides the backyard?
Only Keystone so far. And we cruised around town one day during the weekend when there was like cars lined up at Keystone for like a mile. We went and looked at some miniature spots, little rails and little electrical boxes. It’s been good. Hopefully we’ll go to Breck when their park opens and maybe Copper.

All angles covered.

All angles covered.

Are there any feuds between the English and French speaking Canadians?
No [laughs]. Well… we do have two, oh sick! [Red Gerard flies by on his little sister’s snowboard] We have two condos, and it’s kind of funny because it naturally happened, all the English people are in one condo and all the French people are in the other condo. But I think that’s normal, they are no qualms over that or anything else. Everybody’s pretty chill, the French guys are pretty good at speaking English when we’re around usually. I don’t mind that they speak French, that’s where they’re from and that’s their first language, so you can’t really get mad at someone for that [laughs]!

So last year you were involved with a bunch of different video projects, you made Civic Affair, had a few clips in Mayday! and a few things in Crazy Loco. Were you in anything else?
I don’t think so, no.

So what are your plans for this coming year, do you know?
Yeah, I am working with the Deju Vu guys this year. They’ve going two years with their projects. And I think throughout the early winter a few of the guys will have stuff come out online that their no going to be saving. But I am only working on it this year, so I’ll have like a one year part while the rest of them will have a little bit more, but I don’t think it will make much of a difference.

And are you going to make another skate video?
Yeah! I worked all this summer on a new one called… well have you heard of a skateshop called Antisocial, in Vancouver?

Switch Backside Lipslide as the sun sets over the Rockies.

Switch Backside Lipslide as the sun sets over the Rockies.

Yeah, Rick McCrank’s shop.
Exactly, so they approached me to make a video for them. So this whole last summer I’ve been working on a new shop video for them. They made one about ten years ago, and they said they haven’t really felt like there has been a time since then that there was a strong enough… I don’t know how you would explain it. These days, there are a lot of younger guys like my friends and myself that like to be around the shop and be involved because we like what they do and it’s like the raddest part of Vancouver skateboarding. So we’ve been hanging out a lot and became good friends with the shop, and they naturally wanted to make a video. So now it’ll just be a lot of the older guys from the original video ten years ago, they’ve been coming out a lot. But mainly it’ll be a few of the dudes in the video I made last year.

I remember McCrank’s part from Menikmati years ago where he goes snowboarding.
Yeah, he loves snowboarding. He went all last year and he’s real excited to go this year. So that’ll be cool, hopefully I can go ride a couple days with him.

What’s the best thing you’ve done so far in Colorado?
We’ve been going to the Rec Center in Breck, Louif instagrammed a few photos. We’ve been going into the racquet ball room; but we don’t play racquet ball, we just play muff, which is like the game with a soccer ball. So that’s been fun. I guess that’s kind of a pathetic funnest thing to do in Colorado. Actually, I take it back. The best thing we’ve done is this, what we’ve been doing right now. I haven’t had time to marinate on it, but this is probably my favorite thing: being at the Gerard family backyard.
