There's a ton of buzz around Colorado about the Hooper brothers new project, Will Film for Food. Our web journalist, Bailey Mesch, caught up with Aaron and Zach Hooper to get the inside scoop behind "Livin".
Bailey: Can you tell me about the new company Will Film For Food?
Zach: Will Film For Food is an independent production company focusing solely on snowboarding at the moment. We are located in Aspen, Colorado.
Bailey: Where did the name Will Film For Food originate?
Aaron: I just started thinking and realized what I really do is, film for food…I just keep doing it regardless of monies made because I just love making snowboarding movies.
Bailey: Who's involved in the new company?
Zach: At the moment it is just my brother being the Principle Cinematographer / Editor / Director and myself being the Producer / PR / Marketing guy. We also have a handful of contributing photographers, filmers and artists like Silvano Zeiter, Tim Zimmerman, Jonathan Gold, Grego Campi, Kristofer Fahlgren, Gary Milton, Nate Laverty Shaun McKay, last but not least Wyatt and Yancy Caldwell. As for the stars of the show, this year we were thankful to have Frederik Kalbermatten, Forrest Bürki, Mason Aguirre, Aurel Anthamatten, Erik Botner, Shayne Pospisil, Matt Edgers, Nick Ennen, Wyatt Stasinos, Cory Stasinos, Nick Russell, Forest Bailey, Blake Paul and Patrick McCarthy.
Bailey: What were the goals behind starting the project?
Zach: Well I think that we both originally picked up cameras just so we could keep the dream alive. However, in short, the goals are to create a successful production company that documents snowboarding the way we see it, to have fun while doing it and to keep giving back to snowboard culture.
Bailey: Have you produced videos in the past?
Aaron: Before my brother and I produced "LIVIN", Zach actually produced a 16mm project a few years ago that I helped edit called "BLOOD" with Wyatt and Cory Stasinos. As for myself, I have been filming, editing, and producing movie projects for the past decade. I started with an indy film called "UnInvited", helped Danny Kass and Jared Slater with the Grenade movies, after that Burton gave me a job where we created many movies with many legends, then I went to VideoGrass for a few and finally Keegan Valaika and I started up Givin and produced "One" and "Too".
Bailey: The Teaser for your new movie "LIVIN" just came out; tell me what everyone should expect to see from the new group and the new video.
Zach: Our viewers can expect to see a slew of powerful snowboarders, remote locations, uniquely composed shots and a cutting edge edit. We are not recreating the wheel here, you know. Just documenting the season as it unfolds.
Bailey: Where were you all filming last season?
Aaron: We filmed in Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.
Bailey: Doing a powder heavy video is pretty unique these days. What was the push behind it?
Aaron: It was sort of dictated by location. Everywhere I traveled this winter it was crushing snow. Plus I really wanted the snowboarders involved to have a product that they really like as far as the movie's style of filming, music and editing…There are so many street movies out there, which is sick because they're all so good but I just thought, where's all the powder going? Global warming?
Bailey: Seeing Forest Bailey in the backcountry may be new to a lot of people. How did he do?
Aaron: He fucking killed it! Wait until you see his part in TransWorld this year. I am super excited to have had the opportunity to work with him again. Always stoked to hang with Bailey, he is an amazing dude and an amazing snowboarder.
Bailey: We're stoked to see you guys at the Denver premiere in September. How do you think people are going to respond to the new film?
Zach: Well we hope that people will be stoked of course but I honestly believe the way my brother sees and documents snowboarding is very, very captivating…We are genuinely thankful and super excited to be partnered with Snowboard Colorado for our world premier in Denver during Snowboard On The Block. Who wouldn't be having a good time at an event like this?
